Apple announced a new workstation class iMac known as the iMac Pro during Monday’s WWDC keynote.
It was later confirmed that the RAM in it will not be user replaceable. Why am I not surprised? This system will have its buyers that will order it with max RAM. It will also have its detractors looking at this closed box all-in-one design. I just look at this and shake my head. The obsession with thinness is again pitting form over function. Even the updated specs on the 27″ iMac is still no match for my Asus SFF gaming system which is already Oculus VR ready (and I can still upgrade the graphics card in that box if I need to).
This is why I am not holding my breath on the redesigned Mac Pro they are working on because I know they aren’t going to return to anything close to the old cheesegrater box. And if this iMac Pro starts off at $5k, it’s already a surefire thing that the starting price for the lowest end Mac Pro will start off at over $3k and the Apple designed high resolution display will likely carry a hefty price premium as well.
In the past, I gladly payed that premium (I still use a 30″ Apple Cinema Display on my 2010 Mac Pro). I know that I purchased well over $100k worth of Apple product over the course of the mid 90’s until that last Mac Pro (which is the last time I purchased an Apple desktop) but I’ve reached a point of not wanting to deal with having to jump through hoops with tying myself into Apple’s eco system.
