On February 5th, 2025, protestors across the US gathered at their state capitol (or other government buildings) at their local 12noon time, to make their voices heard regarding the “administrations” policies/lawless disregard for the US Constitution. No one really knew how large these rallies would be because even for myself, there wasn’t much information online besides a subreddit (which has coverage for the day).
Generally, several hundred to a few thousand protested at each capitol (or in major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco) throughout the day. At the Hawai’i State Capitol in Honolulu, several hundred ended up gathering at its peak (a dozen or so counter protesting Trump supporters gathered across the street along with those who were on that side to take photos/videos before crossing to join).
The crowd extended further East (well past the left side of these photos; faces blurred). I also shutdown my phone and used an older one without a SIM to shoot (because this regime will go to massive lengths at tracking people down once they’ve taken out the remaining guardrails).
Several lawmakers came out to mingle with the crowd/do impromptu speeches. It was peaceful and the energy level great/upbeat; it’s definitely more personal when you are out there with others for the same cause (similarly, no incidents in other states were reported). Some wondered why a weekday. Part of it was the play on the date (2-5-25). The noon time (local) was meant to crossover with lunchtime (thus anyone working could try to take some time to become involved).
For something of relatively short notice and without much major promotion, I would say it was a decent first showing. But the sizes need to get much larger. Sure, many of us are very aware that the regime is looking for large scale protests so that martial law can be declared. Many of us believe that is going to happen really soon once the CIA is dismantled (and both Patel and Gabbard are confirmed). Bondi (a loyalist) was confirmed as Attorney General which means the DOJ is done (thus most of the institutional guardrails are gone).
The Republican’s refused the overture by Democrats to have Elon Musk subpoenaed to appear before the oversight committee. Thus the GOP majority Congress which is supposed to serve as the check on the executive, are forfeiting their responsibility (and throwing the Constitution under the bus). Basically, they are allowing the executive branch to consolidate complete power (it is no longer an exaggeration to say that the US is now sliding very quickly into an autocratic dictatorship; one that will have immense ramifications globally).
As noted many times, I’m not into politics (this isn’t something I normally get involved with or even enjoy writing about) but what is happening in the US is something that I cannot ignore (and protests like this are an important part of exercising what rights we citizens do have; rights that can be taken away just as what has been happening recently, or like in the past with how Japanese American’s were stripped of their rights when they were forced into internment camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941). And I am writing about it now before blogs like this end up being silenced (censored off the net).
