One of the ugly sides of this past weekends opening launch of the iPhone 6, was that of scalpers and resellers (many from China who hired regular Chinese immigrants in the US or homeless in Japan as line sitters and/or buyers).
Chinese customs officials however are being more strict this time around when it comes to the illegal importation and smuggling of high profile electronic devices like this. While doing a routine luggage scan, they discovered some irregularities with a box of cookies. Upon inspecting the contents, they found it was filled with around 20 16GB iPhone 6’s. The devices were confiscated and are presumed to be authentic iPhones.
These phones weren’t from the US; they were inbound from Hong Kong (where the iPhone 6 also went on sale, and promptly saw gray market prices jump to a premium of $1k at minimum).
Chinese (and likely US) customs officials are also aware of the situation that occurred over the weekend in the US; there will likely be more seizures for phones that do not have the proper documentation.
