That TwitchCon Assault…

The clip of the original assault is documented here and the creator who was assaulted (Emiru’s) streamed her thoughts about things:

As far as I’m concerned, she (Emiru) really should seriously take legal action against Amazon/Twitch for negligence in their security protocols (no settlement either; get full discovery, depose/subpoena Clancy and key executives – lawsuits and having executives being put under oath are the only thing these large corporations understand especially when they know the facts are not on their side).

Forewarning: I make absolutely ZERO apologies for calling out the following people for what they are; morons and idiots. None of these incompetent buffoons can be shamed because they have none to begin with.

That such a non-serious response came from Amazon’s head of global security (who had to fly out to San Diego) is telling. Who is this person? Chief Security Officer Steve Schmidt. That title should be changed to Chief Stupidity Officer.

That this weak statement (of what happened) by Twitch cleared corporate legal/PR highlights how the company needs to have its existing executive “leadership” removed/the company overhauled. You cannot fix idiots who believe that their response to this entire incident was sufficient because in their mind, that is what they believe.

Clancy himself (on the 18th) gave what looked like a rehearsed interview with that tech reporter hack, Taylor Lorenz. Link to short clip of it in this article. He had the gall to say their trust/safety is one of the best in the business… excuse me? Look at the trash that happens often on Twitch itself and this incident. They don’t even apply their terms of service equally in many cases.

Not long ago, I unapologetically wrote about what a “dumbass of a CEO Clancy is”. I’ll be blunt (again); he’s been this clout chasing hack, one who I’ve NEVER considered a useful executive for a streaming platform (I’ve criticized him on multiple occasions for his poor decisions). Well, maybe now more people will see that he needs to be terminated for cause ASAP because he OWNS the immediate response to what happened as chief executive officer of Twitch (which is closely tied to the event organization of TwitchCon).

If the board of directors had any clue, Clancy’s termination announcement should only be a formality and technicality at this point of it being announced first thing Monday morning (see update). IMHO, TwitchCon itself needs to be done away with (incompetent event organization + IDGAF Amazon execs + incompetent Twitch leadership do not mix well).

Why my “hot take” on this whole incident and not sugarcoating things? Because of the amount of actual threat actors on sites like Twitch, YouTube, Discord, etc that some of us SEE and have to deal with behind the scenes. There have been incidents just this year resulting in the fatality of some content creators that were associated with other platforms.

Emiru said she had the means to hire her own private security and acknowledged many other creators do not have that luxury. The issue however is a convention like this lacking proper security protocols to begin with where you can see for yourself how much potentially worse it could’ve been.

UPDATE: unsurprisingly, Clancy remains employed as of October 20, 2025 (a full workday). This is all that one needs to know since it highlights the internal culture at Amazon/Twitch where they likely felt their response and protocols were proper and that the current negative backlash will wash over because they believe they have a mostly captive audience of creators, viewers, and spenders (and they wouldn’t be wrong because just how many will leave the platform?). Plus if he had any sense of honor, would’ve taken that step himself. Gotta excuse him though… probably still out of it from the after parties.

Lot of corporate talking points and legalese sort of originate from that same “lip service” view. The sheer incompetence at the highest levels of these companies is staggering now. But hey, those terms of use, privacy policies, and every PR fluff piece they put out sounds good and makes it look/sound like they know what they are talking about.

Last year when I was criticizing this moron and his lousy decisions, I completely pulled back spending on subs and bits that supported various channels (using the remaining balance in my wallet). I also began reducing my time on the platform and have written on numerous occasions about just deactivating again (though there are a few channels/creators I would like to continue supporting, there is a point where optics matter where I’m highly critical of the executive decision making, it looks hypocritical to continue patronizing that service by still using/spending money on the platform — I’ve cut out the spending part and reduced time, but I’ve now reached the point of wanting to break association with it completely).

This is no different from the past where I cut the connections to places (like Silicon Valley as an example) when I no longer felt great about what was happening overall. It’s also similar to when I divested from several companies because of various executive level decisions. I realize I’m also more the exception when it comes to “moving on” like that. And as of current, I am in the “clocking out” frame of mind with the entirety of Twitch seeing how Clancy hasn’t been outright terminated/stepping down on his own for this level of incompetence.

There’s a few things I do want to see through before pulling the plug though; one creator completing her 3rd month of plus level 1 (at the end of this month), another completing a 100km walk across Tokyo (November), and another completing his biking trip across Japan (also November). But past 2025 (especially if there has been no major shakeup at Twitch AND Clancy being shown the door), I don’t know if I will still be active on any of these platforms.
