I’m pretty much that person who doesn’t know of a lot of the big names on social media, YouTube, Twitch, etc. It’s not much different where I don’t really know the names of many famous celebrities in the entertainment business. I suppose working in Silicon Valley (and at companies like Sun Micro and Apple where you had way too many big names), just made it easier to not want to be concerned with celebrities and influencer types. Many of them are just people (many are also operating in a different reality and different social circles because of that fame/wealth).
Like before I learned of Twitch Japan IRL, I had zero clue who people like Dogen were. And even to this day, I never really looked them up (I just know of the name from streamers mentioning them) and have no idea what they are about. Another name I’ve heard mentioned but do know about is Yabatan, and that was only because I recall him being on NHK World’s Tokyo Kawaii International years ago (and even to this day, I have no idea why except that he was a comedian who became popular in Japan). No offense to either of them (they are probably in fact nice people), but maybe one day there will be a compelling reason for me to learn more about them.
While I do listen to a lot of music (and thus naturally know more info about those musicians than I sometimes care to know about), I’ve also never had any desire to go out of my way to meet any of them (but ironically, ended up doing so by chance on various occasions). I don’t even ask for things like autographs/photo ops either because the empathetic part of me does not want to waste their time with yet another fan chasing them.
Part of that is me (being unknown/incognito is a nice thing because being known/famous becomes an intrusion on your privacy/personal space/time). I do know there are a few rare types (like Keanu Reeves) who go out of their way to give people their time and are decent/levelheaded people. But that again, is a rarity. The other thing is that I prefer to not clutter my head with details about such folks (so unless there is a compelling reason for me to know more about them, I’d just prefer to continue “living under a rock”.
