This is a nation wide follow on to the successful general strike that took place in Minneapolis on January 23rd; the first one had the endorsement of the Minnesota AFL-CIO labor union while this one has the support of the AFSCME Local 3800 union (labor unions getting involved is key to larger scale nationwide general strikes being able to gain traction to shut the entire socio-economic engine down).
January 30th calls for a day of no work, no school, no shopping (if people need to do things, they should do them; the priority one is no shopping). Other acts could be simply unplugging from social media/staying off large platforms (what I’ve been doing – tried deactivating off of Twitch as part of this action but see below). Basically a lot of ways nowadays to make small impacts on your own.
During the weekend (January 31st and February 1st), it has both organized and individual group protests across the nation; Saturday is meant to be demonstrations outside of ICE facilities (and generally protesting the unconstitutional conduct of this corrupt regime). Basically, the time for inaction/online only slacktivism is over.
As I mentioned before, general strikes are going to be a core part of sending a signal to the establishment that the general public (the everyday working class) is done with the system, and that a critical mass of the population will be involved in a socio-economic-political revolution (something that IMHO is required because the existing systems in the U.S. have too many systemic issues/are completely broken and require a massive change).
Single day ones like this Friday action are more like a dry run (because the economic impact isn’t really going to be felt by just single day strikes); these will need to be longer and grow in size. But it needs to start somewhere. Out in the street protests (like this weekend) are something that also need to grow in scale (because they can’t shoot all of us without turning it into international condemnation).
Note: Unfortunately, Twitch doesn’t allow disabling accounts now that are onboarded to anything (affiliate, partner, developer) without offboarding from them first (BS).
