Mac Pro – RAM Upgrade -or- Is This Enough Memory?

Just a few weeks ago, I was questioning my sanity purchasing that Radeon Pro GPU, only to then get the Duo version a week later along with a CPU upgrade (because I managed to get a good deal on both). Which led me to look at just getting another 256GB of memory… YOLO.

The round sticker on the packaging (128GB SSD) above gave me a WTF moment for a short bit but quickly recognized they were in fact R-DIMM’s (the labeling underneath was accurate).

As if I hadn’t opened up this Mac Pro so many times in the past month, this was number four. The memory slots are located on the opposite side of the logic board under some DIMM covers.

Installation was typically straightforward (remove DIMM covers, remove unneeded DIMM’s, add in the new ones following the memory configuration recommended). The 4 16GB DIMM’s were slower speed (2666MHz) sticks which is why I left them out.

I know that 512GB sounds excessive, but when you have multiple virtual machines, it really isn’t a lot. Or maybe, I just did go insane. 😛
