M 8.8 Earthquake – Kamchatka Peninsula (Tsunami Warnings Issued)

August 2, 2025 UPDATE: the JMA has dropped all forecasts.

July 31, 2025 UPDATE: the JMA has revised their advisory to a forecast (mainly related to strong currents/tides + sea level changes associated with the diminishing wave energy that may affect coastal waters for at least a week).

July 30, 2025 UPDATE: all warnings and advisories by PTWC were downgraded as of 12PM Pacific. Crescent City in northern California (another tsunami hot spot due to its topology) did see waves flooding the harbor area (around 3.6 feet/1.09 meter) at around 1AM Pacific time (damaging a dock in the process). While there were flooding impacts and some damage, there was thankfully nothing major/life threatening. Most of the damage seems to have been in Russia closest to the epicenter (Kamchatka and Kuril Islands). However, since the region is sparely populated, there have been no reported injuries.

Japan’s JMA still has their advisories in place (after the last warnings for Hokkaido and northern Tohoku were downgraded) as of July 30th 20:45 JST (the advisories are mainly for the strong currents caused by the remaining wave energy affecting coastal waters).

All ended livestream broadcasts were removed from this posting and media hub site.

July 29, 2025:

Earlier reports was that it was a M8.0 but it was quickly upgraded (8.7 then 8.8). Tsunami warning is out (USGS) for locations closest to the epicenter including the Aleutian Islands. Tsunami watch warning is in effect for other locations including coastal areas along the Pacific including parts of Japan, Guam, Saipan, the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Japan Meterological Agency info (map as of 6:05PM Pacific):

As always, stay tuned for local news. Anyone in low lying and coastal areas should take precautions ahead of time (this is several hours of lead time for locations furthest away from the epicenter).

6:50PM Pacific: tsunami waves confirmed in the Kuril Islands and northern most locations in Hokkaido (initial wave heights not yet reported).

Video from Kuril Islands after the quake showing the initial tsunami inundation. Location: Severoclisk in the Kuril Islands

Video is coming in from Japan. Initial waves were measured at only 30cm at around 10:46am JST (but in 2011, similarly some spots initially only saw a 20cm wave before the next set of waves were over 1m). Later tsunami have been in the 50-60cm range.

7:15PM Pacific: confirmed 3-4m tsunami waves seen in the Kamchatka Peninsula areas closest to the epicenter.

10:51AM JST: 40cm initial tsunami wave confirmed in Tokachi, Hokkaido

7:30PM HST: Scientists noted buoys at Midway Island and Johnston Atoll measured tsunami wave heights of around a meter. Thus the Hawaiian Islands may likely see some impacts.

7:45PM HST: Web camera at Hanalei Bay on Kauai showed receding water and filling back in again (approximately 1ft or 30cm initial wave). Scientists noted the 3rd observation at Midway (buoy) had the largest wave amplitudes ~1-3 meters). The following is ongoing live coverage from Hawaii which is looking like will be experiencing some sort of impacts as the next larger waves start coming in over the next few hours (plus scientists except some of those waves will be undergoing the “wrap around effect” of the islands where that energy will consolidate/have differing local impacts).

NOTES: Largest tsunami wave in Japan was 1.3 meters at 1:52PM JST in Iwate. In Hawaii, the largest amplitude to date was at Haleiwa Harbor (4 feet/1.2 meters) Kahului Harbor (5.7 feet/1.7 meters) where coastal flooding is being reported. The parking lot at Coconut Island in Hilo Bay was also flooded as is the area fronting the hotel. Generally speaking, it looks like mostly tsunami action that is mostly flooding and and not the strong destructive flow as well as the rough/strong currents caused by the energy. Calling it a night (hopefully the warnings will be downgraded to advisories in the next couple of hours). Will remove the live stream links tomorrow.

10:45PM HST: Tsunami warning downgraded to advisory for the Hawaiian Islands. JMA continues to have warnings remaining in effect for parts of Japan’s Pacific coast.
