This is a follow-on to what I had previously noted. There have been even more returning greencard holders returning from Japan to the U.S. (like California and Hawai’i) relaying the more intense questioning they are receiving during re-entry. In Washington state, a 50 year resident (greencard holder) who had just returned to the U.S. after visiting family in the Philippines, was detained and is being held in a Tacoma ICE detention center. The article has the backstory on a possible reasoning (a non-violent embezzlement conviction from 2000) for her detention.
The fact they’ve been disappearing people for their opinions (without any legal representation/due process), is highlighting how quickly the U.S. is sliding very quickly into a fascist autocratic dictatorship that wants to use these intimidation tactics to silence dissent and protests. Thus more countries are adding travel warnings to the U.S. (as noted, I’ve also been advising people NOT to come to the U.S. if they can avoid it); France, Ireland, Norway, and Portugal have since added their own warnings to the original four countries.
Considering the ongoing criminality of this regime which includes Signal-gate (plus the earlier pardoning of convicted January 6th participants, many of whom were violent), this is unsurprising hypocrisy. It also highlights the hostile environment and the unease this demographic is now feeling. And no, the rest of us aren’t going to be safe either since they will just redefine the rules for who they want to target next (this is following Hitler’s playbook).
