I previously wrote that I was going to try and stay away from politics related topics because of how polarizing that can be (especially given what has been taking place in the US over the past several years + presidential election cycles).
Disclaimer: I personally stopped following politics constantly in recent years (maybe I look at the news for it every month) in the US because of how divisive it has become (where it is driving friends, families, personal relationships apart to a point where the country is divided into camps where for one faction, facts no longer matter). My take on all that is that “a country that stands divided, surely will not be able to remain standing.”
I then saw this and it is spot on (and needed to put my 2 cents in about it).
Politicians in general are out of touch with a lot of industries and technology is no exception. The other issue is this particular politician is spewing inflammatory lies/rhetoric not only about this, but for a whole range of issues (that is the sort of divisive bullshit that for many who do not follow politics 24×7 like myself, despise). And the backhanded racist tropes are stuff that does not play well with the reasonable folks who are also ethnic minorities (I’m one of those folks). I’m also one of those independent voters.
As an Apple shareholder, lot of us do try to hold the company to higher standards (I don’t agree with 100% of their current approach and know there are situations where they could do better; I’ve noted this on my old blog). I’m also a former employee (seeing it from the inside pre-iPhone). To outright lie and say the company uses Chinese slave labor is ridiculous (he is free to provide independently verified proof of those claims).
Digressing, I decided to watch the first debate just to see how Vance’s running mate would do (it’s insane that this autocratic wannabe who is also now a convicted felon, is the Republican nominee… I do realize that party has been taken over by extremists who want to do the same with the US government, but from the outside/to the rest of the world, the US looks off the rails nuts).
The crazy talk and divisive rhetoric (like what Vance was spewing in the above) aren’t going to be good for this country/the economic engine/regular people as a whole should they get into power). Political hacks like Vance making uninformed accusations like this aren’t going to win over those who are independent/looking at things rationally (like myself).
