… in saying that he expected this would be the mother of all upgrades.
Record number of iPhone pre-orders (Apple statement to media sites – no official PR yet since they probably want to wait until certain numbers are reached – in 2012, iPhone 5 pre-orders topped two million in the first 24 hours which means, we’re already north of this in less than 24 hours. The iPhone 5C and 5S did not have any pre-orders; they went directly on sale last year and sold over 9 million in the first weekend).
iPhone 6 pre-order demand was so strong that the Apple Store remained offline (due to overload) for over 2 hours before finally coming back online again. Confirmation and order status is still slow going according to many reports. The carrier sites were also overwhelmed with customers unable to even get past the eligibility part of their ordering or being greeted with an error message saying to try again later.
Those doing their upgrade pre-order from the Apple Store, are now being assigned an iPhone reservation since the carrier sites are overloaded (inability to communicate back to Apple account information/eligibility).
The estimated delivery times for the 6 Plus went quickly from 9/19 to 7-10 business days and is now to 3-4 weeks. Pre-order supplies could be constrained of the 6 Plus compared to the 6 (if 6 Plus sales are doing better than expected, Apple will end up making similar statement like they did last year when they mentioned that 5S pre-orders were stronger compared to the 5C).
As of this post, the iPhone 6 (on the Apple Store web site) is still showing 9/19 delivery for all colors, storage sizes, and carriers (thus I’m currently leaning towards a much more limited allotment of 6 Plus units).
